Come join us for The Big Paws Christmas Special on the 18th of December—when we’ll be broadcasting the show live from 1973.
Nineteen Seventy-Three was the high point of Christmas, it’s never been as good again. With Slade and Wizzard battling for their Midlands-based glitter-fests, dressed in tin-foil like a fattened turkey. We’ll be glammed-up and have crackers, tinsel and a tin of Quality Street for anyone who pops in to the studio at the Custard Factory (8am-10am we’re on, you know that).
All the usual favourites, Tweet of the Week from 1973, and the latest and new music from the hotest bands… of late 1973. What will 1974 have in store for us?
And Noel Edmonds? He’s on Radio One.
One of our best shows was June’s Birmingham Music Month show with the lovely Jez Collins from the Birmingham Music Archive, and we’re broadcasting it again instead of a live show this Saturday (6/3) from 8am to 10am.
The show notes are here — and the tracklisting is here — so you can see what you’re in for.
We’re back live as usual next Saturday 13/3 — see you then.
I’ll be attempting to make a sock monkey live on the radio this week, and you can make one too! Not only that, but your creation could star in the video for Brummie band Kate Goes‘s debut single, All We Wanna Do is OH.
They’ve made an instructional video and everything:

Update
I’ve watched the video through a couple of times now and I recommend you do the same if you’re going to join in. I’ve scribbled down some reminder points for myself, so thought I’d share them:
Step 1 – Body and legs
Step 2 – Mouth, arms, tail, ears and eyes
Here’s the diagram from the video that shows which sock parts make which monkey parts:
Eh, voila (hopefully).
Don’t forget to send us photos of your work in progress and the finished article via twitter (@thebigpaws) or email (studio@rhubarbradio.com).
Then send your monkey off to Kate Goes to star in their video (address in the instructional video).
Don’t worry, no Atomic Kitten or Pussycat Dolls, but this Saturday’s Big Paws will be a football kitten special.
In honour of kittens, I’ve been picked the bestest kitten related tunes going.
To get you in the mood, here are some of my all-time favourite kitten and cat videos:
Kittens, inspired by kittens:
Talking cats:
Keyboard cat:
And here are a couple featuring The Big Paws resident puddy tats, our very own Bollo and Boo:
Where are my socks, Bollo?
Your go Bollo:
For those who like kittens AND football:
Tune in to The Big Paws at 8am on Saturday on Rhubarb Radio, or we’ll send some kittens to cute you to death!
Jon “Slacker” Bounds is away again this Saturday (he’s on his cousin’s stag weekend this time) so I’ve asked my good buddies Libby Hayward and Chris Quigley to come and give me a hand with talking gibberish on the show.
Libby is going to talk to us about her involvement with Birmingham Friends of the Earth and give us some cycling tips (despite being prone to regularly ‘losing’ her own bikes!). Here’s Libby and I when we met Cerys Matthews at her gig at the Glee Club last year:
Chris is the German Christmas Market’s biggest fan and if he had his way would probably have it here all year round. Here he is enjoying an invisible weisbeir with our very own sweary newsreader Wes Mundell (aka Adam Juniper):
He’ll be making sure Libby and I don’t get too giggly.
Unfortunately I don’t think we’re allowed animals in the studio, otherwise they could have brought along their beloved pooch Poppy, but here’s a gratuitous cute animal pic anyways as you know we’re fond of teh cute at The Big Paws

This is Gavin Wray, web genius, European lager connoisseur and northern soul affictionardo — and the newest member of the Big Paws team. From this coming Saturday Gav will be turning up with a northern record to tell all about and to play, tune in next week to start your soul experience…
