  • The United Nations designated 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity and International Year of Youth in honour of Teenagers wash baskets.

  • In big cat breeding news five lionesses at the Singapore Zoo are put on birth control after the lion population increases from 2 to 16.
  • Sports entertainment would never be the same agian — WWF WrestleMania debuted at Madison Square Garden.
  • The United Kingdom had its first ever national Glow-worm day, no news as yet on the second.
  • Richard Ramirez, the serial killer known as the Night Stalker, was captured in Los Angeles.
  • The computer game Tetris was released in this year.
  • The Live Aid pop concerts in London and Philadelphia raise over £50 million for famine relief in Ethiopia, and awareness of Phil Collins
  • Ruth Lawrence, 13, achieved a first in mathematics at Oxford University, becoming the youngest British person ever to earn a first-class degree and the youngest known graduate of Oxford University.
  • The Greenpeace vessel Rainbow Warrior was bombed and sunk in Auckland harbour by the French
  • Born in this year were Dutch supermodel Doutzen Kroes,Dutch singer Simone Simons, and famous American prostitute and R & B singer-songwriter Ashley Alexandra Dupree,
  • Passing away in this year were actor Sir Michael Redgrave, silent film godess Louise Brooks and brother of Telly Savalas George Savalas,

  • It was the year that the Sony Walkman was released

  • Philips demonstrates Compact Disc publicly for the first time, jam sales rise.
  • Born: Australian singer Brody Dalle, drummer for the alternative band, Maroon 5 Matt Flynn, and famous Chinese weightlifter Tang Gonghong.
  • Dead: Sex Pistol Sid Vicious, Governor of New York and Vice President of the United States Nelson Rockefeller, and Loving You singer Minnie Riperton.
  • The 1979 general election ended with a Conservative victory and Margaret Thatcher the country’s first female prime minister.
