No Live show this week – 10/04/2010 – Look what you would have won
Jules is not too well (please direct all sympathy to @catnip, she deserves it). If we were in the studio, instead of leaving a pre-record for your pleasure (of this show) we’d have:
Played a few Malcolm McLaren related tunes — probably this:
and this
and shown you this bizarre Sooty-and-Sweep sing the pistols vid:
and told you about when momus talked to malcolm.
We’d have done Tweet of the Week and this would have won, probably: “@sueperkins: Wrong that I’ve been using my dogs tails as drum sticks whilst listening to The White Stripes? The dogs are still attached…”
We’d have decided to play a hashtag game, probably about horses — have a go at #horsepop if you like.
And we’d have chaotically run a Grand National sweep — so it’s probably best we didn’t.
*LIVE* craft this week on The Big Paws
I’ll be attempting to make a sock monkey live on the radio this week, and you can make one too! Not only that, but your creation could star in the video for Brummie band Kate Goes‘s debut single, All We Wanna Do is OH.
They’ve made an instructional video and everything:
You will need:
- 2 x socks (they don’t have to be a matching pair, ankle socks are too short tho)
- scissors
- needle and thread
- buttons
- stuffing
- pencil
- an awake!
Who’s in?
Update
I’ve watched the video through a couple of times now and I recommend you do the same if you’re going to join in. I’ve scribbled down some reminder points for myself, so thought I’d share them:
Step 1 – Body and legs
- Take the first sock and flatten it out.
- Cut a line (through both sides of the sock) from the open ankle part down to the heel.
- Turn the sock inside out and cut a hole where the mouth will be.
- Sew up the legs.
- Turn the sock back the right way again by pulling it through the mouth hole.
- Stuff the sock monkey’s legs and body.
- Sew up the mouth hole.
Step 2 – Mouth, arms, tail, ears and eyes
- Take the second sock and cut out the heel to make the mouth.
- To make tail, cut a strip right down the whole length of the front of the sock from ankle to toe, sew it and stuff it (use a pencil to push stuffing to end of tail, small pieces at a time).
- Make the arms from the remaining material in the top half of the sock.
- Cut ears out of the remaining material.
- Sew body parts onto the monkey.
- Sew on buttons for eyes
Here’s the diagram from the video that shows which sock parts make which monkey parts:
Eh, voila (hopefully).
Don’t forget to send us photos of your work in progress and the finished article via twitter (@thebigpaws) or email (studio@rhubarbradio.com).
Then send your monkey off to Kate Goes to star in their video (address in the instructional video).
Our first show
We will be starting our very first show on Rhubarb Radio on Saturday 7th March at 8am. We’re dead excited (and just a teensy bit scared!) and hope you’ll be listening. We’ll be live-tweeting our track list during the show, and straight afterwards we’ll have the track listing on this website too, along with loads of links to the stuff we’ve been talking about.
For those of you who think that 8am on a Saturday morning is a little bit obscene, you’ll be able to ‘listen again’ to the show at any time during the week. We’ll post the link here as soon as it’s available.
You can contact us at any time via our Twitter account (@thebigpaws) or by dropping us an email to hello@thebigpaws.co.uk.
Don’t worry, we won’t be playing this (that’s Jon singing, that is).
